worm tales
a few weeks ago it started to get a little bit warm here in omaha, a trick, because the following week it was back to 40 deg and rainy. we can't seem to get a spring this year. this is my first spring here, so maybe this is normal? about a week of 65 then a week of record breaking cold temps down in the 20s, then some weather in the 50s, then some in the 70s, then back to the 40s for a solid week. yesterday and today 90 deg. this pattern that i just wrote out was the month of april. now the newscasters are saying we are moving right on into summer without any nice spring weather. honestly, this was what i was looking forward to the most about moving to nebraska-the temperate spring and fall. i was totally overheated in san antonio and cape canaveral, our last two assignments. Anyway, we went out in the 70 deg weather and planted some lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, and strawberries. the lettuce and spinach have been completely eaten away by the rabbits (got to get a fence!) the tomatoes seem to be doing really well, but the strawberries are hurting from the cold and excess rain they were exposed to because i planted too early (who wouldve thought that april 20 was too early) My mom was here and we turned over all the dirt in the little plot, and we found a small earthworm, the first of many. i asked connor if he wanted to hold it, and he did, so i put it in his palm. he liked the worm, but didn't like the dirt around it, and said too dirty. so i put the worm back in the dirt. well, of course, miriam wanted to ohld the dirty thing, and since she didn't know what it was, just held out her hand and said 'dirty' so i put the worm in her palm, but unfortunately, it freaked her out, so she started shaking her arm around spastically, and the worm went flying! out of her hand, and straight at connor's head! well, connor thinks worms are okay in his hand, but not flying at his face, so after it bounced off his head and landed in the grass (poor worm) connor took off running. "i'm not ever gardening again! EVER!" poor connor. he was upset for a good 30 minutes after that worm bounced off his head. miriam, however, was not at all traumatized once she threw the worm.
