FIRST SNOW!

Shocks me how beautiful the first snow is. By Jan or Feb the snow will be so ugly, such a burden, all piled up along the sides of the roads, the product of snow plows and people shoveling. And it will feel so cold and and all we can do is long for spring. But the first snow, or the first few are so magical! we watched as the sky came down to meet the ground, and the kids of course, couldn't even wait to eat their breakfast to get out in it. i let them go, bundled them up and sent them in the back yard. after all, its only supposed to flurry for the morning, then the temp goes up above freezing and there is no more precipitation on the horizon for at least the next week. they just came in at 10:30 saying they were hungry. i wont be surprised if they want to go back out after their cereal. of course, today being the first day of our thanksgiving break, i also wouldn't be surprised if they asked to watch tv or play video games. (no video games during the week, in general, and tv is more limited) unfortunately i do have to go out today, i need one more pie pan. i looked yesterday, but there weren't any at the 2 stores i checked. today i make pies (pumpkin and pecan) and start the bread dough (it needs to mature in the fridge for a day. tomorrow mashed potatoes and yams and baking the rolls and bringing it all over to a friends house, who is handling the turkey and the stuffing and cranberry sauce. i also bought sparkling cider, which we call 'kid wine' in my house. the kids love to feel involved in the holiday champagne toasts and the specialness of it all.
