happy fathers day!

To all you wonderful fathers out there and especially to my dad. we had a pretty mellow day here. hubby was still sleeping come a normal time for mass (say 9:30 or 10:30 or even 11:30) so i let it slide until i knew we wouldn't be able to make it to the last mass in the area at 12 noon. so i woke him up around 10:40 and he got up around 11. yes my hubby likes to sleep in. he has always had a very late night body clock, and when he takes big chunks of leave, he almost always ends up almost 12 hours off. it can be a little irritating, really, since he is taking leave, we want to see him, but he stays up until dawn and then sleeps until 3. but anyway, the weekends don't allow for that kind of deviation, and most of the time i don't want to wait until noon mass, so i get him up earlier. but its fathers day, let him sleep, right? we went to church, which went reasonably well with a very active and loud 2 yo, came home, made him omelets at his request, and since i had bacon grease, tried my hands at biscuits and gravy. (southern style, in case you were wondering, my maternal grandfather was born and raised in arkansas) my moms gravy is the best i have ever tasted, barring my great grandmother when we were kids and she still cooked a lot. (she is 92 now, and really doesn't do too much of the chores anymore...although i think youd be surprised) and mine turned out not too bad! i couldn't remember any of the specific instructions, like how much flour for the roux? (about twice as much flour as milk you want to mix in) or does it matter what kind of pan? (yes, cast iron is best) so mine came out a little bland partly because i forgot to add salt, but hey, you can salt whenever. then the kids gave their daddy some presents (star wars risk and a video game) and then i took a very short nap, and then i got started on dinner- also requested-thai beef salad. which is actually very simple-you just have to have the ingredients and be willing to slice things very thin. simple but time consuming. mine turned out pretty good, but next time i am going to try a different recipe, i wasn't completely crazy about it. the kids ate ice cream for dinner. not after. for. dinner. i just didn't have the umph to fix them something else, and the 4 serrano peppers that went into salad pretty much barred them from eating it. then after dinner we had a go at star wars risk, which is for ages 10 and up, but connor (age 6) insisted on playing. he did really well, although he didn't get some of the finer points of the game, and said afterward that it wasn't the most fun game that we have, because it took too long and he kept losing his planets. twice during the game, miriam managed to get ahold of the dice and throw them across the board, scattering pieces everywhere. i thought jason was going to pop a veing. then we had to spend 10 min getting all the guys back where they were. what a mess! hard to keep miriam out of things though, because she doesn't listen and thinks she can do everything that big brother can do. Connor is in bed, I am about to go as well, jason is beginning his new video game, final fantasy 12, and miriam is watching him (she unfortunately napped today from 5-7 pm--we cannot keep her awake when she is tired, likewise get her to sleep when she isnt.) its been a nice day. goodnight! =>
